Common card access system read the UID (unique identifier) and/or CSN (card serial number) of an RFID card to authenticate users. The UID/CSN is stored in an open area and is easily accessible to read. Today, the CSN of any Prox or MIFARE card can be cloned easily.

In order maintain integrity, card access systems must instead authenticate encrypted data in the RFID card. Such authentication is similar to that used for credit cards and considered highly secure.
